Tasting “Var Magazine Launch” @ Wooster St. Social Club
Sunday April 15th, 2012
Hosted by : Sally Shan, Var Magazine, and Fuse TV’s Juliya Chernetsky
Music provided by: DJ Steve Lewis and live performance from Joanna Erdos & the Midnight Show
VAR Magazine launched its first printed edition of their publication at Wooster Street Social Club, home of TLCs reality television show NY Ink. The purpose of the event was to launch VAR’s inspired vision of tattoo and body art into mainstream culture. The event provided drinks by Vision Vodka, Moonshine Whiskey, Alacran Tequila, Mercy, and passed hors d’oeuvres by Stand4 Restaurant.

Here’s what our “Tasters” thought. Click the Names to find out more about them.

Zero : Var Magazine’s Launch was on a Sunday night… boo. But it was from 7pm-12… YAY!
We rarely make it out on Sundays because we’re either recovering from the nights prior or we’re too lazy too put clothes on. Lazy Sunday indeed ;) So we were more than happy to check out an early party that allowed us to come home at a decent time since we all do the weekly 9-5 as well. Here’s our thoughts on the event.

VirGIN: I didn’t realize that Wooster St. Social Club was a tattoo parlor at first. The name is kind of deceptive. I kind of thought it was a “boys and girls” after school rec center or something to that extent. I guess all the inks, gloves, and templates gave it away.

Zero : An interesting mix of people showed up to the event. Pregnant pink sunglasses, huge muscles covered in tats, and some guy with a clothes pin necklace rounded out the eclectic crowd this evening (wish we took a pic of that him.)

As with all these types of gatherings, the local “watering hole” was always pretty packed. Kudos to the bar keeps for keeping up with the demand.
After meandering around and checking out the interesting visuals hanging off the walls, the host for the evening, Juliya Chernetsky, announced there would be a live performance from Joanna Erdos & the Midnight Show.

We headed on over to the VIP section and flashed our wrist stamps. The band came on and immediately photographers rushed to snap some pics. The lead singer kinda looked like Lizzy Caplan.

Their sound was good but a big pillar kind of obstructed your view of the band if you were looking straight on. Also, it was too bad that you couldn’t get a closer look at the live show if you weren’t allowed access to the VIP section. Regardless, they played a good set that matched in theme with the party. We’ll be looking them up now.
VirGIN: Strangely enough, one of the high lights of the night was when they brought out food. Yes you heard that correct. It’s one thing to serve complimentary moonshine, but you know everyone will be craving something to munch on. Plates of small chicken bits and tater tots were placed randomly about the event but away from large groups. Plus they had dipping sauces.
We were lucky enough to be standing at the table when a tray of food was laid out in front of us, but when the other hungry hyenas noticed fresh game, it became a stuff your face competition. I guess everyone needs a buffer for all that free alcohol.

Zero : Not even 5 minutes later that plate was almost empty. So we helped finish it off.

While we were waiting on the extremely long line for the bathroom, the host Juliya, started calling out names for some sort of raffle. Apparently they were giving away butter, facials, and teeth whitening sponsored by Rank My Dentist. And yes, she made the obvious “facial” joke. Can’t blame her though cuz so did I ;)
At that point we were pretty liquored up and decided to call it a night. The bartenders were pretty heavy handed. I guess they really wanted everyone to get drunk because of the other sponsor, Mercy drinks, who were also passing around their beverage. Anti-hangover in a can? Sure why not!

I couldn’t help but think though, “So where is the actual magazine?” I kind of thought there would be stacks laid about but nothing I could see when looking around. Maybe they ran out before we got there? Hmm…
VirGIN: We stepped into the VIP area one last time to get our final look around. A bunch of photographers were huddling the DJ booth so we decided to investigate.
Lo and hehold, DJ Steve Lewis was getting a tattoo.

Zero : As we left and began to walk down the street, a girl who was standing behind me on line for the bathroom thanked me for being so quick. You’re welcome.
